February on the campus of the University of Notre Dame can be incredibly cold. But, in February of 2012, George Avery Alcorn III spent a significant amount of his day standing outside in the freezing cold wearing shorts and sandals. As a volunteer with the Day of Man, George Avery Alcorn III was attempting to increase awareness about the plight of the homeless in his community, who often stand outside in the cold as they truly have nowhere else to go. He was also attempting to raise funds.

Passersby were encouraged to place money in the cup George Avery Alcorn III was holding, and all proceeds went to the South Bend Center for the Homeless. While participating in this event was physically challenging, George Alcorn III was glad to have the opportunity to help those in need. This event is held annually, and it’s considered a signature fundraising event of Notre Dame’s Siegfried Hall, where George Avery Alcorn III was living at the time.
